Christmas Tradition

Christmas Family Celebration with OPLATKI

The Vigil begins anytime after the first star has appeared on the sky.

Family and guests gather around the vigil table. Under the white tablecloth a small
amount of hay can be placed. This reminds us of the manger in which the Jesus-Child lay.
The “centerpiece” is a small tray or Christmas plate. On the napkin are the Christmas
Wafers-Oplatki. The Christ-Child from the family manger may also be placed on the
plate. Candles on the table represent that Jesus Christ is the “Light of the World”.
Before approaching the vigil table the family prays together, grateful for all the blessings
   of the past year.
Prayer
Peace be with this house and with all who live here.
Blessed be the name of the Lord. All respond: Now and for ever.

Then the Holy Gospel is read: Luke 2,14

When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another:

"Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us".

They went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger;

once they saw, they understood what had been told them concerning this child.

All who heard of it were astonished at the report given them by the shepherds.

Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart.

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen,

in accord with what had been told them.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Having heard the Holy Gospel, we now share the holy bread-wafer.
The sharing of this bread brings with it promise of forgiveness of faults and that
the year ahead of us be a good one.

A male head of house begins the solemn ceremony by taking the Wafer-Oplatek
and turning to his wife, wished her good health for the upcoming year, success in her
housekeeping, the fulfillment of her heart’s desire and to forgive him his faults.
A conclusion, she expressed her thanks, break off a piece of the wafer that was
extended to her and consumes it. She then offers her husband a piece of her wafer,
responding to him in in kind: wishing good health and fortune, that they all be together at the next

vigil table, and because of the sharing oplatek one overlooks any ill feeling, forgets hurts

and ends any enmity or unfriendliness. She accepts his words of reconciliation and ask that he too

overlook her deficiencies. The husband would then break off a piece of the wafer extended to him

  and consumes it.

The wafer is then shared with any other relative present, honored guests and then children.
Everyone has the opportunity to say a few words and exchange good wishes.

The dead are reminded too by consuming some of the oplatek and saying a prayer for them.

Pink and yellow color of oplatki we share with the pets and animals too, because they were first

   to greet the infant Jesus.

   The Dinner Begins

   *This is a meatless dinner
*There should be uneven number of dishes served.
*There should be an extra place setting for unexpected guest.
*The time after dinner is the time for the family to gather together to   sing carols.
The Shepherds Mass concludes the Vigil of Christmas Eve.
